SYNOPSIS
It’s September 1999. A doctor leaves his house on the coast of Brittany with his two young children, gets on a previously rented sailboat and disappears into the sea. At his house and in his van, traces of blood are found, all belonging to his wife. The story of this seemingly simple family disappearance will take a wild turn leading the police on a cruise from Lewis Island in Scotland, to Madeira in Portugal, to the Isle of Man.
How can an international fiasco involving offshore havens and a far-right political group turned mafia find itself at the heart of a murder mystery tragedy?
Across French newspapers, as well as Scottish, British and Portuguese media, this case made the front page for years after the disappearance. Proceedings and investigations went on for over 15 years for the French judiciary system, making it one of the most costly and complicated cases the country has seen.
The most common version of the story involves a simple murder-suicide storyline: Doctor Godard vanished at sea and killed his wife and children. Months after the disappearance, fishermen will find a small skull in their nets belonging to his 6 year-old daughter. Years later, the remains of the missing doctor will also be fished out of the water. Case closed… or is it? Is this truly an isolated situation, a family tragedy?
