SYNOPSIS

On the sacred plateau of eastern Tibet, Yaqen Gar is home to some 20,000 Buddhist monastics, two-thirds of them women. Despite pressure from the Chinese authorities and the threat of demolition, thousands of nuns pursue a life of spiritual devotion and emancipation. The filmmaker, the only Western woman to have lived among them, offers a rare glimpse into this unique community and a way of life that may soon disappear.
